Dale is still doing quite well managing the pain in his left leg. Our concern right now…is just keeping him calm as can be as our amputation surgery is not scheduled until August 11th. Our biggest fear is having him shatter the leg. I’ve read a couple of posts that lead me to believe this is a very real possibility. Someone is with him 24/7…just in case this happens and we do have a 24 Hour Vet Hospital near our home.
We are also getting the house ready for his life as a tripawd. We have mostly hardwood floors…so we have ordered up some additional throw rugs and runners. Dale has been using his dog bed a little more than usual…below is a picture of him enjoying some time in his bed. Any other suggestions/advice is much appreciated!
Our beautiful Siberian Husky (at least that was how he was sold to us…he may be more malamute) was diagnosed with Bone Cancer in his left front leg last weekend. Dale will turn 10 on September 14th. This came as quite a shock to us…as he is in very good health. Like many on this site…we noticed a limp about two weeks ago and decided to bring him into our wonderful vet. We assumed he had hurt himself running around and it was some sort of bruise or sprain.
We were shocked to find out it was bone cancer. After consultation from our vet and some research we have decided on amputation. The surgery is scheduled for August 11th. We are very grateful to this site…as it made us much more confident in our decision. I did think we were maybe being a bit selfish at first in wishes to just keep him with us longer.
The lung x-rays show no sign of spreading to the lungs thus far…although we know this will most likely eventually happen. Please wish us luck in the next step of Dale’s life as a Tripawd. He is a very active and loving dog…and we know he will bounce back post amputation! Right now we have him on pain meds…he is resting a bit more than usual…but overall in pretty good spirits.
